Perfect Your Streamline

A strong streamline is the foundation of efficient swimming. It teaches your body how to hold tension, stay narrow, and move forward without wasted motion.
Why Streamline Matters
A streamline is a locked, high-tension body line that helps you knife through the water with minimal drag. It gives immediate feedback: if one part of the body leaks out of position, you slow down right away.
When swimmers practice streamline consistently, they improve:
- Body alignment
- Core connection
- Glide distance
- Stroke efficiency
Build the Position Step by Step
- Stack one hand over the other.
- Wrap the top thumb around the bottom hand to lock the shape.
- Reach both arms long overhead.
- Squeeze biceps behind the ears and keep elbows tight.
- Engage core and glutes to hold one connected line.
- Keep legs straight, together, and toes pointed.
Common Drag Leaks to Watch
- Hands separating during glide
- Elbows drifting wide
- Head lifting too high
- Knees bending or legs splitting
Spotting and fixing these leaks is the fastest way to improve distance per glide.
Training Set: 5 x Streamline Glides
Try this simple set at the start of practice:
- Push off from the wall (or bottom in open water)
- Hold streamline with no kicks
- Exhale steadily until breath runs out
- Walk or easy swim back to start
- Repeat for 5 total reps
Track your best glide distance each session. Small gains over time usually translate to cleaner technique across all strokes.
Coaching Cue
Think: "Long, locked, and quiet."
If the body stays long, the core stays locked, and the water around you stays quiet, you are likely in a strong streamline.
